Rupert Guenther presents: Marcus Aurelius

Music

ABOUT THE EVENT

This work draws on the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius to explore, through music, what the virtuous leader might offer a modern world if he were to suddenly appear today. It presents a stark contrast between Aurelius' integrity and humanitarian vision and the instability often seen in today's global leadership.

Seven extended improvisations serve as a musical meditation on the Greek concept of eudaimonia ("good-spiritedness"), the path of a life spent practicing virtue and living in accordance with nature.

The music contemplates a life grounded in self-control and free from anger, envy and jealously. It imagines how a leader shaped by these principles could help achieve a secure future built through wisdom, collaboration and cooperation - rather than one by suppression, domination and war.

This performance takes place on a specially designed electric baroque violin, custom-made for the work, and was created in discussion with Australian master luthier Paul Davies in country Victoria.
