Little Learners: Little Me, Big World!
ABOUT THE EVENT
Discovery and exploration for big minds and little hands!
Designed for curious minds aged 2–5, this playful and enriching program invites children to explore their world.
Led by our expert educators, each session blends hands-on activities with exploration of museum objects and galleries, with a focus on children's connections and contributions to the world.
Through stories, movement, creative play, and sensory activities, children will begin to form an understanding of who they are before discovering the wonders of the bigger world. Along the way, they’ll build confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging.
The program celebrates care for our planet, inspiring young learners to become thoughtful, respectful caretakers of the world around them.
Little Learners takes place on Level 3 every Thursday during school term from 9.45am - 10.45am.
Week 1 | 16 October – Me and My Museum
Who are you? Little Learners begin by exploring their own identity and creating a self-portrait. What is a museum? They will then learn about the Museum, exploring objects and the stories they tell. They’ll finish the session with a sensory walk of the Museum.
Week 2 | 23 October – My People, My Place
Children will explore the special people and places that make up their world; from family and friends, to neighbours and helpers in the community. Little Learners will then celebrate the connections that help them feel safe, loved, and part of something bigger. This session is all about belonging, sharing, and discovering where we fit in! They'll also visit the Reflections gallery to explore some of our favourite activities and games.
Week 3 | 30 October – My Earth, My Home
Come along on a journey around our amazing planet! In this session, children will explore the land, water, air, and living things that make Earth so special. Little Learners will discover how the Earth takes care of us, and how we can take care of it too! They'll finish the session with a visit to the Changes gallery to see some pictures of Earth from space.
Week 4 | 6 November – The Sun and the Moon
Join us on a journey to the sky as we explore the sun and the moon! In this session, children will discover why the sun lights up our day, why the moon glows at night, and why both are so important to life on Earth. Little Learners will shine as they uncover the wonders of our day-and-night sky. They’ll visit the Origins gallery to watch the Night Sky.
Week 5 | 13 November – My Solar System
Look up, way up! Blast off on a space adventure and explore the wonders of our solar system! In this session, children will journey past the planets, discovering what makes each one special. Little astronauts will learn about our Solar System and our place in it. Then, they’ll visit the Origins gallery to find some objects that have come from outer space.
Week 6 | 20 November – A World of Water
Splash into a session all about water, one of the most important parts of life on Earth! Children will explore where water comes from, how we use it, and why every living thing needs it to survive. Little Learners will uncover why oceans are so important and how we can help protect them, before finishing the session with a visit to the Wild Life gallery.
Week 7 | 27 November - Underground Worlds
This week we explore the secret world beneath our feet. What lives under the ground? What are the things we cannot see and why are they important? Little learners will visit the Innovations gallery to look through microscopes at things we cannot see with our naked eyes!
Week 8 | 4 December – The World of Bugs
Get ready to crawl, wiggle, and fly into the amazing world of bugs! In this session, children will discover why insects are some of the most important creatures on our planet. From pollinating plants to cleaning up nature’s messes, bugs play a big role in keeping our world buzzing. They’ll finish the session with a visit to the Wild Life gallery to find some bugs!
Week 9 | 11 December - The World of Plants
Where would we be without plants? Discover how plants live and grow and why they are so important to people, animals and the Earth. Be ready to do some planting of your own, before visiting the Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn gallery to look at some of the plants featuring in the Nyoongar seasons.
Week 10 | 18 December – Caring for the World
In this special final session, children will celebrate all they’ve learned about the World and discover simple, powerful ways to care for it every day. Little Learners will explore how small actions — like recycling, saving water, and being kind to nature — can make a big difference. They will grow a love for our planet and a sense of responsibility for its future. They will also visit the Connections gallery to find a very special work of art made with ‘rubbish’!
