The Western Australian Museum in Perth will host the Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu exhibition from 1 September until 4 November 2012.
Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu is an exhibition of stunning Aboriginal artworks by three generations of the Marika family of north-east Arnhem Land that explore the journeys of the Djang’kawu Ancestral Beings.
Comprising approximately 60 works, this is an exhibition that goes to the heart of Aboriginal culture. The Marika family, who are part of the Yolngu people, are well-known and highly regarded for their stunning traditional artwork. The exhibition uses paintings, decorated objects and carvings that convey a strong sense of place and ancestral meaning to open up a dialogue about Indigenous rights and the role of Indigenous art in the 21st Century.
This is a touring exhibition presented by the National Museum of Australia, developed by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in partnership with the Marika family. Supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program
