SOUNDIG is an interactive archaeological experiment and live performance, a history machine that occupies the past and the present.
An enormous pipe has been dug up from under the Perth Cultural Centre. A scaffolding structure has been set up so that everyone can view it and listen to the mysterious sounds coming from inside.
Stairs go up and stairs go down but they don’t always connect. Drainpipes run throughout with sounds emanating from each of them, scientifically re-discovered by the SOUNDIG team and leaked through the pipes for you to listen.
But like all good scientists and artists, you need to decipher whose histories are being told since one person’s fact is another person’s fiction. Go online to upload your own sounds and help build a democratic archive of Perth’s aural history at soundig.co.nz
